Vertigo & Dizziness
Vertigo can make the ground feel like it’s moving under you. Rolling over in bed, looking up, or standing too fast can set off a wave of spinning, unsteadiness, or nausea. It’s unsettling, and it can make you nervous to do simple things. At Serene Chiropractic in Worcester, MA, we help figure out what may be behind your dizziness and whether chiropractic care is a good fit.
What’s going on?
Vertigo is the feeling that you or the room is spinning. It’s a symptom, not a diagnosis, and it can have several causes. Many cases come from the inner ear, like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), where tiny crystals in the inner ear shift out of place. Some dizziness, often called cervicogenic dizziness, is linked to problems in the neck and usually comes with neck pain or stiffness.
Common contributors
Inner ear
Problems in the inner ear’s balance system are the most common cause of vertigo, especially when it’s triggered by head position.
Neck tension & injury
Neck pain, stiffness, or a past injury like whiplash can affect the signals your brain uses for balance.
Other factors
Dehydration, some medications, hormonal changes, and migraines can all play a role in dizziness.
How can we help?
We start by asking about your symptoms and doing a careful exam to help sort out where your dizziness may be coming from. If your neck seems to be involved, care may include gentle adjustments, soft tissue work, and exercises to improve neck movement and balance. If your symptoms point to another cause, like an inner ear problem, we’ll explain what we found and help you get to the right provider.
When to see a doctor first
Dizziness can sometimes signal a serious problem. Call 911 right away if your dizziness comes with:
-Sudden weakness, numbness, or drooping on one side of the face or body
-Trouble speaking, seeing, or walking
-A sudden, severe headache
-Chest pain, a racing heartbeat, or fainting
If you have new or frequent dizziness, hearing loss, or ringing in your ears, we may also recommend seeing your primary care doctor or an ENT.
