Latching & Feeding Difficulties

Feeding your baby is supposed to feel like bonding, but when latching is a struggle, every feed can feel stressful. Maybe your baby clicks, slips off the breast or bottle, prefers one side, or seems frustrated and tired before they’re full. You’re not doing anything wrong. At Serene Chiropractic in Worcester, MA, we gently check how your baby’s jaw, neck, and body are moving so feeding can feel a little easier for both of you.

What’s going on?

Latching and sucking take a lot of coordination between the jaw, tongue, lips, and neck. If your baby has tension or restricted movement in any of these areas, they may have trouble opening wide, staying latched, or turning comfortably to both sides. This can come from their position in the womb, a long or difficult delivery, or oral restrictions like a tongue or lip tie.

Common contributors

Birth & positioning

Time spent in a tight position in the womb or a difficult delivery can leave tension in a baby’s neck and jaw.

Favoring one side

If turning the head is uncomfortable, babies often feed better on one side than the other. Learn more about torticollis.

Tongue & lip ties

Oral restrictions can limit how well a baby latches. These are assessed and treated by providers like pediatric dentists and ENTs, and gentle bodywork can support recovery.

How can we help?

Pediatric care at our office is very gentle. Adjustments for babies use light, fingertip pressure and involve no cracking. We assess how your baby’s neck, jaw, and body move, then use gentle techniques to ease tension and support comfortable movement. We also show you simple positioning tips to try at home. Chiropractic care isn’t a replacement for a lactation consultant or your pediatrician, and many families find it a helpful addition to their support.

When to see a doctor first

Call your pediatrician right away or seek emergency care if your baby:

-Has fewer wet diapers than usual or seems dehydrated
-Isn’t gaining weight or is losing weight
-Is very sleepy, hard to wake, or too tired to feed
-Has a fever, especially if they are under 3 months old

If feeding is an ongoing struggle, we recommend working with your pediatrician and a lactation consultant as well.

Feeding time should feel like bonding time
