Torticollis

Maybe you’ve noticed your baby always looks to the same side, only feeds well on one breast, or tilts their head in every photo. It can be easy to miss at first, and it’s very common. At Serene Chiropractic in Worcester, MA, we gently assess how your baby’s neck is moving and help support more comfortable, balanced movement.

What’s going on?

Torticollis means the neck is tight or shortened on one side, causing the head to tilt and turn. In babies, it’s most often congenital muscular torticollis, which usually comes from their position in the womb or the birth process. Babies who favor one side are also more likely to develop a flat spot on the head, which is why it’s worth addressing early.

Common contributors

Position in the womb

Limited space late in pregnancy can keep a baby’s head turned one way for long periods.

Birth

A long labor, assisted delivery, or awkward position during birth can strain the neck muscles.

Daily positioning

Lots of time in car seats, swings, and on the back can reinforce a head preference.

How can we help?

We assess how your baby turns and tilts their head and how their neck and upper back move. Care uses gentle, low-force techniques to ease tension, and we show you simple stretches, tummy time ideas, and positioning tips for home. Physical therapy is often recommended for torticollis, and chiropractic care can work alongside it. We’ll let you know if we think your baby should also see their pediatrician or a pediatric physical therapist.

When to see a doctor first

Check with your pediatrician right away if your child:

-Develops a head tilt suddenly, especially with a fever
-Had a fall or injury before the tilt started
-Has weakness, unusual eye movements, or seems unwell
-Isn’t improving or is missing developmental milestones

Most babies with torticollis do well with early care. Your pediatrician can help rule out other causes.
