Headaches
Headaches have a way of sneaking up on you. It starts as tightness at the base of your skull or across your forehead, and by the afternoon it’s all you can think about. If you’re reaching for pain relievers more often than you’d like, you’re not alone. At Serene Chiropractic in Worcester, MA, we look at what may be behind your headaches and help you work toward more comfortable days.
What’s going on?
Most headaches aren’t caused by another illness. The most common type is the tension-type headache, which often feels like a band of pressure around the head. Another type, called a cervicogenic headache, starts in the neck and sends pain up into the head. Both are often linked to tension and restricted movement in the neck and upper back. If you get migraines, our migraines page covers those in more detail.
Common contributors
Neck & posture
Looking down at screens and sitting for long periods can strain the muscles and joints of the neck, which can send pain into the head.
Stress & jaw tension
Stress often shows up as tight shoulders and a clenched jaw. Over time, that tension can trigger or worsen headaches.
Sleep & daily habits
Poor sleep, dehydration, skipped meals, and too much caffeine are some of the most common headache triggers.
How can we help?
Chiropractic care doesn’t replace your doctor, but it can be a helpful part of your plan. We assess how your neck, upper back, and jaw are moving, then use gentle adjustments and soft tissue work to help ease tension. We also show you simple stretches and posture changes to help between visits. Research suggests spinal manipulation may help some people with tension-type and neck-related headaches, and many patients find it a useful, drug-free option.
When to see a doctor first
Most headaches aren’t dangerous, but some need medical attention right away. Call 911 or go to the emergency room if you have:
-The worst headache of your life, or one that comes on suddenly
-A headache with fever, stiff neck, confusion, or a rash
-Weakness, numbness, vision loss, or trouble speaking
-A headache after a fall or head injury
If your headaches have changed recently or you’ve never been evaluated for them, we may also recommend checking in with your primary care doctor.
