The Webster Technique

If you’ve heard about the Webster technique from a friend, your birth team, or online, you may be wondering what it actually is. It’s a gentle, specific approach to chiropractic care during pregnancy that focuses on the pelvis. At Serene Chiropractic in Worcester, MA, Dr. Serena is Webster certified and uses it to help expecting moms feel more balanced and comfortable.

What is it?

The Webster technique is a chiropractic analysis and adjustment that looks at the balance of the sacrum and pelvis, along with gentle soft tissue work around the pelvis and abdomen. It was developed to help reduce stress on the pelvis during pregnancy. A balanced pelvis may also give your baby more room to move, which is why many people seek it out later in pregnancy. It is not a method for turning babies, and no pressure is ever applied to the baby or the uterus.

What it focuses on

Pelvic balance

The focus is on how your sacrum and pelvis are moving, since imbalance can strain the joints and ligaments.

Gentle soft tissue work

Light pressure on supporting muscles and ligaments, like the round ligaments, can help ease tension.

Any stage of pregnancy

Webster can be used throughout pregnancy, and many people continue care right up until birth.

How can we help?

Your visit starts with a quick check of how your pelvis is moving. Adjustments are gentle and done in positions that are comfortable for you and your growing belly. Many moms use Webster care to help with back pain and pelvic pain, and to support their body as it prepares for birth. We’re happy to coordinate with your OB, midwife, or doula, and we always recommend keeping your birth team in the loop.

When to see a doctor first

Call your OB or midwife right away, or go to labor and delivery, if you have:

-Vaginal bleeding or leaking fluid
-Regular contractions or cramping before 37 weeks
-Your baby moving less than usual
-Severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling in your face or hands
-Severe belly pain

If you’ve been told you have a high-risk pregnancy, check with your OB or midwife before starting chiropractic care.
