Vagus Nerve Support

Maybe you feel stuck in fight-or-flight. Your shoulders live up by your ears, your stomach always feels unsettled, sleep doesn’t come easily, and it’s hard to fully relax. You may have heard that the vagus nerve plays a role. At Serene Chiropractic in Worcester, MA, we take a gentle, whole-body approach to help you feel more at ease.

What’s going on?

The vagus nerve is the main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, the “rest and digest” side of your nervous system. It runs from the brainstem through the neck to the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. When stress stays high for a long time, the body can spend more time in “fight or flight,” which can show up as tension, poor sleep, digestive upset, and feeling on edge. Research on the vagus nerve is growing, but there’s still a lot we don’t know.

Common contributors

Chronic stress

Ongoing stress keeps the body in a heightened state and makes it harder to shift into rest.

Neck & jaw tension

Tight muscles in the neck, jaw, and upper back are common when your body is under stress.

Breathing & sleep

Shallow breathing and poor sleep can keep your nervous system on alert.

How can we help?

We focus on what we can help with: easing tension in the neck, upper back, and jaw with gentle adjustments and soft tissue work. We also teach simple tools like slow breathing, gentle movement, and sleep habits that research suggests can support relaxation. We see this as one part of a bigger picture, and we’ll encourage you to involve your doctor for digestive, heart, or mood symptoms.

When to see a doctor first

Call 911 or get care right away if you have:

-Fainting, chest pain, or a very slow or irregular heartbeat
-Trouble breathing or swallowing
-Severe or ongoing vomiting, or blood in your vomit or stool
-Sudden weakness, numbness, or trouble speaking

Digestive, heart, or mood symptoms should always be checked by your primary care doctor.
